Rolls-Royce Science Prize 

We are delighted that from over 2,000 national entries, our school was voted second for the prestigious Rolls-Royce Science Prize. 

We received £5,000 and the support of a Rolls-Royce Mentor to help us implement our planned science development in school. We then received a further £5,000 following the awards show.  

Over the course of the academic year, we documented our project with monthly diary and video entries and were invited to attend the Rolls-Royce Science Prize celebration event in November 2019, where we were announced runner up.

This month, the Young Leaders and Eco Rangers have worked to raise environmental awareness through:  

  • Launching the family Eco Passport
  • Marine awareness assemby
  • 'Sea in a Box' competition
  • 2nd hand uniform sale
  • Re-Love sale

We have also reviewed the impact of key aspects of our project so far:

  • STEM Club
  • Staff CPD
  • Science Curriculum linked to class novels
  • Practical science progression
  • Learning beyond the classroom

March 2019

This month we have celebrated British Science Week throughout school with:

  • #ScienceSelfie Challenge
  • Whole school Science Open Afternoon attended by famiies and the Mayor of Wakefield
  • STEM Club led assemblies
  • 'Women in Science' assemblies
  • Visit by Finlay Asher, Rolls-Royce mentor
  • Planetarium
  • Year 6 visit to Leeds University Science Festival
  • Space themed lunch

This month has seen

  • Staff training to deliver hands-on science enquiry
  • Increased Governor awareness of the breadth and place of STEM in the curriculum through teacher presentations and visits to classrooms
  • Year 3 and 4 learning about electricity and materials through roles as 'Alarm Engineers' and 'Government Scientists' designing warning systems and traps for 'The Iron Man' from the Ted Hughes novel.

  • Foundation Stage children exploring the frozen conditions where 'Penguin Small' lives, by finding out how ice feels, moves and changes

This month has seen staff:

  • Demonstrating the way we are working and developing our curriculum to our Rolls-Royce mentor, Finlay Asher.
  • Working with Finlay to be able to effectively articulate our project, including to non-educationalists
  • Having developmental observations and feedback on their practice
  • Reflecting on how the curriculum is working so far; beginning to change and refine our planning, based on our evaluations
  • Being inspired by attending this year's Rolls-Royce Science Prize Award Event at the Science Museum

October 2018

  • Year 5 and 6 learn about melting and heating as well as tempering chocolate on a visit to Cadbury World
  • Year 6 problem solving whilst exploring our local environment in Coxley Wood
  • Year 3 and 4 making 'Flat Stanley' gingerbread bodies with iced digestive systems
  • Year 1 and 2 become 'Junior Doctors' to find out parts of the body and how to make Granny better
  • Foundation Stage work out how to help and cheer up Crispin; the dragon who can't breathe fire
